News from City Council District 13’s Mitch O’Farrell on the future of Parks in Los Angeles

mitch-ofarrell-13th-dist

the following is a copy-paste of a letter sent out today by Councilmember O’Farrell: ……………………………………….. In a unanimous vote this week by my Council colleagues, we updated guidelines on the decades-old development fee program that are utilized to fund parks and open space in Los Angeles. Folks, the City Council took action to plan for our City’s future. Our vote on Quimby fees will preserve our city parks today, and secure funds for the great park spaces of tomorrow. The funds from development projects will go toward building or improving our park infrastructure, support affordable housing with an exemption for affordable units, nearly double the increase in development fees for parks, and include fees for market-rate apartment projects. My constituents have entrusted me with privilege of working to improve and protect our public space, and that is exactly what we are doing with this unanimous decision. The future of our parks facilities is bright, and I want to thank my colleagues for their support, as well as our staff with City Planning and ...

WIT summary of actions / recommendations to the board (July 2016)

At our first two WIT meetings (the 15th and 26th of July), we covered a lot of ground. Here’s a brief summary of what happened. The things we voted to approve and recommend to the board will be discussed, some voted on, at the next board meeting. This concise write-up will be shared with the board at that meeting, but it also helps the community to see what we’re coming up with as we formulate a plan for a new and improved website.

GPNC still needs an Area 2 Rep!

GPNC_area_2_map

The new board of the Glassell Park Neighborhood Council has been seated, and we’ve had our first two board meetings.  Next month will already be our 3rd meeting! This next meeting will be Tuesday, August 16th—but our board has a vacancy.  During elections, no one ran for Area 2 rep.  If you live in Area 2 and would be interested in joining the neighborhood council, please come to the meeting on Aug 16th and self-nominate for this position.  Then, at the following board meeting (September 20th), the board will vote. Not sure which part of Glassell Park is Area 2?  Check out this map: Our bylaws describe the protocol for how vacancies on the board are filled as follows:  “The Secretary or other Executive Committee member shall announce the availability of the vacant position, indicating that qualified Stakeholders’ self-nomination for candidacy will be accepted, in person, at the next General Stakeholders meeting. At that meeting, nominees who appear in person and provide a declaration of their status as a GPNC Stakeholder will be ...

Website & IT Committee Meets Again, July 26th!

internet_image

The following post was written to announce our first meeting on July 15th.  Turnout was low, and we tabled many items on the agenda.  The meeting on July 26th will be a chance to include new people and discuss the items we didn’t get to at the last meeting.  Start time is different for the meeting on the 26th, but other than that, the rest remains the same!   ………………………………………………………………….. Until now, GPNC has not had a committee specifically in charge of the website, but at the last board meeting, we voted to institute one, and it’s time to get it off the ground.  Tuesday, July 26th at 7pm  is our next meeting, and if you have an interest in helping see that GPNC has the best website around, you are encouraged to join us at the meeting! You are welcome to simply share your feedback as a community member, or if this is something that really interests you, and you can join us once a month for the committee meetings, then join the committee. ...

GPNC Board meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month @ 3750 Verdugo Rd (behind Public Storage)

gpnc_board_meetings_how

The GPNC Board meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. If you’d like to see something on the agenda, send an email to the board (board@glassellparknc.org) with “agenda request” in the subject of the email to ask to have something included.  The deadline to submit something for inclusion on that month’s agenda is the 2nd Tuesday of the month, when the Executive Committee meets (this is one week before the Board Meeting).  Anything not submitted by then will have to be added to the agenda for the following month’s meeting.  Why put something on the agenda, as opposed to just joining us at the meeting to share?  Because the board can only take action on something (vote on it) if it was included in that meeting’s agenda.  If you show up to a meeting with an idea that’s not on the agenda but requires board action, it will have to be placed on a subsequent agenda. If you come to a meeting and want to share something not on the agenda, there is a time ...

I See My River Too Festival

ISMR2F_bilingual

I See My River Too Festival Sunday, July 31st, 1-4pm SotoMayor Learning Academies 2050 N. San Fernando Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90065 A little more information about the event, written by the organization: We are a collaborative group of high school students from the School of History and Dramatic Arts (SoHDA), community members, and organizations. Together we encourage safety, accessibility, and seek to broaden the culture and awareness of our Los Angeles River with our communities and neighbors. Recently, the tragic passing of two wonderful SoHDA students occurred in the Los Angeles River. In loving memory of them, and to honor the appreciation they had for the river, the students from “I See My River, Too” have decided to plan a festival in order to promote safety issues to our neighbors, the communities of Glassell Park, Cypress Park and Elysian Valley. The festival will take place at the Sotomayor Learning Academies’ Campus (2050 N. San Fernando Road 90065) on Sunday, July 31st from 1PM to 4PM. There is plenty of parking and we ...
